 ROMA

Rome or Rome or Rome (Italian: Roma) is the capital of Italy and the municipality and the largest city in the country and the most populous with more than 2.7 million inhabitants spread over 1,285.3 km2. The city is located in the central-western part of the Italian peninsula, on the Tiber River in the Italian region of Lazio.

Rome has a history spanning two thousand and five hundred years. The city was the capital of the Roman Kingdom and is considered one of the birthplaces of Western civilization, the Roman Republic and the Roman Empire, which was the dominant power in Western Europe and the lands bordering the Mediterranean for more than 700 years from the 1st century BC to the 7th century AD. Since the 1st century AD, Rome has been the seat of the Papacy and, after the end of Byzantine dominance in the 8th century, it became the capital of the Papal States, which lasted until 1870. In 1871, Rome became the capital of the Kingdom of Italy, and then the capital of the Italian Republic in 1946.

After the Middle Ages, Rome was ruled by popes such as Alexander VI and Leo X, who transformed the city into one of the major centers of the Italian Renaissance, along with Florence. The current St. Peter's Basilica was built and the Sistine Chapel was decorated by Michelangelo. Famous artists and architects such as Bramante, Bernini and Raphael lived for some time in Rome, contributing to its Renaissance and Baroque architecture.

Rome was ranked by the World Cities and Globalization Research Network in 2010 as a world city with a Beta+ score, as well as the 28th most important city in the world. In 2007, Rome was the 11th most visited city in the world, the 3rd most visited in the European Union and the most touristic city in Italy. The city is one of the most successful European "brands" in terms of both reputation and assets. The historic city centre is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Monuments and museums such as the Vatican Museums and the Colosseum are among the 50 most visited tourist destinations in the world (the Vatican Museums receive 4.2 million tourists and the Colosseum 4 million tourists annually). Rome hosted the 1960 Summer Olympics and was a candidate to host the 2020 Summer Olympics.
